This is portrayed even under pressure as adversity breed’s character. He doesn’t get mad, at least not on the surface, and when he is angry he speaks normally but you can hear the edge in his voice. History:
Mathias is not what you would expect of a wizard. He was born into a No-Maj family and the fun just began from there and his family was along for the ride.
Mathias' mother was the nurturing type and was always finding ways to educate and expand his mind and experiences. She imparted the free spirit that shows when he is having fun or just enjoying his time off. This was catalyst is his drive to this day.
His father, diametrically opposite of his mother, is the epitome of the military industrial complex. He's harsh, militant, and does not ask. He did instill the discipline that Mathias uses when working and with his routine to keep himself healthy.
The years in public school before Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was uneventful. He was well liked by his teachers, a few scuffles with other kids, but overall good grades.
It's a family dynamic and that would provide a path and teach Mathias balance in his life. Whilst learning of his ability to use magic and weather a divorce of his parents while going to school.
Mathias was fearful of attending a new school and meeting new people. His mother was there to support him and encourage him, while his father didn’t want him to attend the school at all. Mathias put on a good front for his mother went back to Ilvermorny.
He found his niche there and made friends. It wasn’t hard he just forgot to be scared. He didn’t find that fitting in was hard at all once he forgot that. He kept at it and the years flew by, he found his niche though, and that was the magical creatures that he learned about during his first few years. He wanted so bad to go out and find them for himself.
His second year was filled with a disappointment that would take time to get over. His mother and father were getting a divorce after twenty-five years of marriage. He was away at school while it took place and when he returned for the break at Christmas he came home to a very different house. It was just his father. Mathias’ mother had taken up residence in another home. He had no clue they were having troubles in their marriage. He was surprised to say the least and his dad blamed his mother for all their problems. He just let it pass over him. He wanted to see his mother and not listen to the issues his father said were her fault.
That revelation of their divorce was devastating but he weathered it well. He dove into his studies and learned to live life between the two houses between the holidays. He always spent Thanksgiving at his father’s and Christmas at his mother’s home. They were happier and he was put at ease by their happiness.
Over a Christmas break with his mother, during his second year, he found that one of her pictures intrigued him. It was an odd picture of St. George taming a dragon. His mother was not a religious woman by any stretch. She did like to collect antiques and the frame and picture did certainly fit with his mother’s eclectic style. The frame was chestnut and had several different size sticks inlaid on the frame. He found it odd that some of them looked like wands. He was bored and took the picture down. It was then he felt it, almost as if it called to him. Mathias ran his hand over the frame and it stopped on one of the longest sticks and he pulled it off leaving a blank spot. It was a wand! He was so excited but who would hide a wand in a painting? He took it and has been using it since. There was an adjustment period with the wand as it seemed a little persnickety at first but they warmed to each other very quickly over the rest of his second year.
His time Ilvermorny flew by and he was graduating from the school sooner than he thought. He was more than happy to get done with school and start to look for a job among the wizard and witch community. He worked several jobs until he found one that was what he always loved to study and now he was going to be working with magical creatures. It was mainly just ensuring they were moved safely and that was a beginning. He learned how to handle them and move them. As he worked he looked for other openings that would advance him into actually catching them and keeping wizard, witches, and NoMajs safe from them. He actually lucked out and found an opening in locally Boston. It was for safe containment of magical creatures for the safety of the city. The woman he learned from had been working with those creatures for over twenty years and was considered an expert. She wasn’t thrilled to have a young and green partner but found that Mathias was eager to learn and listened, which was very important when doing this job.
Josephine and Mathias were called upon to countless times to find, subdue, capture, or if needed kill the creatures that had escaped from wizards and witches. It was a dangerous job and his mother was worried and his father found it all to be nonsense. Mathias quickly picked up the techniques needed to be good at tracking and subduing magical creatures of any type and Josephine was impressed with his abilities. He showed a natural aptitude for tracking and actually capturing those rogue creatures.
They worked together for five to six years before she took early retirement to enjoy her grandkids. Mathias was alone tracking the creatures and found solo work appealing for a while and was quite good at finding the witches and wizards who kept the dangerous creatures and ensuring they were taken to where they wouldn’t harm anyone.
Mathias wasn’t all work though as he did find time to visit his former partner and she urged him to find someone and not let his work be his sole motivation. A couple of his friends invited him to St. Patrick’s Day parade. He didn’t want to go but he hadn’t done anything fun in several weeks so he went with them. He didn’t really get into the day until they started the pub-crawl at noon. Then after enough green beer and regular beer he was quite loosened up.
The parade had started and he was laughing at the floats and how they portrayed thing. It was a great time and the beers were helping make it a wonderful time. .
After the fun it was back to work and tracking a dangerous creature. The rougarou that a wizard had in his home on the outskirts of Boston surprised him but a few slashes on him and a wizard and creature in custody were the end of that.
That night after being treated he was going home, stopped at his favorite eatery, mainly a deli so he could get some cold cuts and was headed to his apartment. He stopped as he heard noises in his apartment’s alleyway. He thought it was perhaps Tom, the homeless man who stayed there and he was going to give him some money to get him some of whatever helped him get on with his day and since it was right next to the deli he would tell the owner not to sell him booze. What he found down the alley was not what he expected.
It was a sphinx, matted fur, actually very thin, and eating the old ham and Swiss cheese that it had torn out of the dumpster. It turned and snarled at him but he waited for it calm down. He held his ground until it spoke to him and he had to wonder where it came from and how it got here. He didn’t ask those questions as he spoke back to it. They talked for a few a minutes and he heard Tom coming and he quickly offered the sphinx his home to sleep in for the night. It accepted and they went through the back to apartment. The sphinx was still nervous but it settled into the spare room.
He woke up earlier the next day, checked on the sphinx, and let it know to stay inside until dark if it was going to leave. He left food out for it and went off to work. This continued for several weeks, as the sphinx didn’t really seem interested in leaving the apartment except to go to the room via the fire escape at night. It did during those weeks start to converse regularly with him and tell him what food it wanted. He got it as he learned more about the sphinx, who wouldn’t tell him his name. He just left it at that. He was proactive as he did file the paperwork to keep a magical creature and inadvertently left what type off until approval and wrote in sphinx, one of the perks of being enforcement he supposed or just a busy office that missed it until it was approved. Either way it was an oversight in his favor and he wouldn’t complain. The sphinx had learned about the bathtub and actually let him shampoo and condition her. She had walked on him several times while he was showering and asked about and now she was clean instead of cleaning herself.
He left check on other more conventional leads and was off making his rounds. He didn’t spend long that week tracking creatures as he was trying to convince his dad not to visit for the weekend that he had plans and he would come to visit him next weekend.
He had found nothing but dead ends on that one and would hit it up fresh the following week.
He found doing his job a joy. Yes he was having hold-ups, and straight dead ends again, but his office understood his work took time. He did put the two witches out of business with the pixies and they were happily being tried and put in jail.
His former partner asked him to visit and when he arrived there was a stranger there, an older woman he had never met. Josephine introduced her as Minerva McGonagall and current headmistress of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He listened intently not saying anything until she had finished. His background in Magical Creature Enforcement Division he could teach students about them. That was her interest in Mathias and since Josephine and her were friends she offered him an opportunity. She asked he apply like any other applicant. After another hour of conversation Headmistress McGonagall took her leave.
He applied to the job, they were skeptical, but invited him for an interview. He toured the grounds, provided references, and demonstrated his skills. The tracking of the magical creatures, mainly ones he had never tracked before, was a challenge, but one he quickly showed he could be proficient in. They were suitably impressed, Headmistress McGonagall said she would have to take a day to consider and he went back to Hogsmede to his room and waited. A day and half later a house elf summoned him and he was awarded the job.
After that weekend they left for England and that showed a side of Mathias that they had never seen, which was how some of his classmates teased him on field trips from Ilvermorny, which was The Portkey Puker. He always threw up after portkey travel and a secret he had hoped to never have to share. It was out now and just wiped his mouth and smiled at them both.
The proceeding months flew by with him readying his class materials, getting magical creatures arranged, and million other things to take care of for his job.
